FDA advises against using chemical sunscreens

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

The FDA proposed new regulations for sunscreens in February 2019 which concluded that of the 16 currently used ingredients, only two — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — are GRAS (generally recognized as safe and effective). These are both mineral active ingredients that work as physical blockers on the surface of your skin rather than absorbed through the pores.

This means that petrochemical UV filters (e.g. oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, avobenzone, etc.) are not considered safe or effective by the FDA and they never will be. Numerous studies now confirm that chemical sunscreens which are absorbed into the skin can upset the body’s hormone balance and are harmful to the marine environment.

And here’s the kicker – the rise in skin cancer rates in the United States (non-melanomas have doubled and melanomas have tripled since 1970) suggests that they do not prevent skin cancer.

Look for 25% zinc oxide products which afford the best UV protection to you and the least harm to the environment.
